We are finishing our series through the Beatitudes. Tonight's verse is Matthew 5:10 ("Blessed are the persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.")The Christian Church has been persecuted for two mellenia, and the clock is still running. Why? The answer is in the beatitudes. Jesus calls us to a place of radical discipleship. He bids us to become his students, his followers, and abandon all that we hold dear. We are to reliquish our hold on everything that ties us down to this world.
We are to be peacemakers - at any and all costs. We are to be single-minded for only God. We are to be the stange people the beatitudes call for. And if we do that, we will be persecuted. The world does not like (let alone love) those who give their sole allegiance to anything else. So, Christians are persecuted.
