THIS WEEK AT FUEL: 6.25.06

We are finishing our series through the Beatitudes. Tonight's verse is Matthew 5:10 ("Blessed are the persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.")

The Christian Church has been persecuted for two mellenia, and the clock is still running. Why? The answer is in the beatitudes. Jesus calls us to a place of radical discipleship. He bids us to become his students, his followers, and abandon all that we hold dear. We are to reliquish our hold on everything that ties us down to this world.

We are to be peacemakers - at any and all costs. We are to be single-minded for only God. We are to be the stange people the beatitudes call for. And if we do that, we will be persecuted. The world does not like (let alone love) those who give their sole allegiance to anything else. So, Christians are persecuted.

Come tonight and join us at 5:30pm in Room 208 as we dive into the Last Beatitude.

WACO MISSION DAYS

This week on Wednesday and Thursday we will be helping out with the Family C.R.I.S.I.S. center, a ministry from the Waco Baptist Association. They need help moving and sorting food, clothes, etc. The calendar says we will go on Friday as well, but ignore that. They're not open on Friday.

On both days, we will meet at the church at 8:30 am, leave at 8:45 am, work until 11 am or so, get back to the church, and then eat lunch. We should be ready to go at 12:30 pm.

There is no The Break scheduled this Wednesday night, but if anyone wants to we can hang out, go to the movies, go bowling, putt-putt, or whatever your heart desires after lunch. See you then!

THIS WEEK AT FUEL: 6.17.06

We are continuing our series through the Beatitudes. This week we're tackling Matthew 5:9 - "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God."

The recent Christian tradition has all but completely ingored this beatitude. Perhaps one of the strangest and most bizarre commands, it was virtually unheard of before being introduced by Jesus to his followers. The idea to love those who wrong you and not retaliate was novel at best.

However, in this beatitude we learn that God blesses the peacemaker, not the peacelover. Christans are to work for peace, no matter the cost. We are to choose to accept loss, instead to causing loss to others. We are to work for peace. We are not to use violence. We are to be imitators of Christ.

Join us tonight as we break this down further. We meet at 5:30pm in room 208.

Time Out will be hosted by Ann Sadler; we'll be back at the church at 9:00pm.

EXPERIENCING LECTIO DIVINA: 6.18.06

This Sunday morning at Sunday School we will continue our series on reading scripture. Last week we went through a very brief and quick overview of The Bible. This week we will begin learning new ways to read scripture.

I use the term "new" very loosely. Lectio Divina is an ancient Christian practice that has been around for hundreds of years. Today, when we pick up the Bible we tend to read over it quickly, trying to get our information as quickly as possible. Our fast-paced society has almost ruined our ability to slow down and appreciate the little things in life. Lectio Divina, when done properly, forces us to slow down and savor God's holy word. I hope that you will join us this Sunday morning @ 9:30am in this refreshing experience.

PRAYER REQUEST

Please pray for Tiffany. She returned home yesterday from being in the hospital. Apparently, she suffered a kidney infection. Tiffany is still in Louisiana and was supposed to return to Waco on Wednesday, but she was put in the hospital. Please keep her in your prayers.

POOL PARTY!: 6.16.06

Don't forget about the pool party this Friday at Cassidee's house! Don't bring money, but do bring friends! It's gonna be a rockin' good time. Plus, Marc is going to give 500 cool points for whoever (and it must be done alone) successfully dunks Cruz. Minus 500 points for whoever attempts to dunk Marc.

Meet at the church at 4 pm, and we'll get back around 10 pm.
